Floating Floor
Located adjacent to wide oceanfront dunes, this contemporary home was completely remodeled in 2014-15. The client wanted many amenities, but also spatial flexibility for functionality. A sizable swimming pool was desired, but so were large terraces for hosting events. Instead of compromising, a pool with a movable floor was installed: when not used for swimming, the floor can be raised to create a continuous paved surface. Water depth can be controlled to create a shallower pool for children or a deeper pool for adults. The same stone was used on both the terraces and the pool floor to preserve continuity when the floor is raised. A split spa/cold water plunge with a zero edge detail was elevated above the pool level. Perimeter covered lounge areas surround the space; the overhead louvers are adjustable to filter sunlight at any time of day desired. The client’s collection of vintage sculpture is also displayed in the landscape – lighting and plantings were selected to showcase them.
