A Jewel Box

On a historic estate along the Main Line of Philadelphia, only a 19th-century gatehouse remained of the original property. This charming structure has now been transformed into a 21st-century family residence, with updates and improvements designed to complement and enhance the whimsical spirit of the original Tudor style. The new home, designed as a “jewel box,” blends contemporary elegance with a deep respect for the gatehouse’s rich history. The new Tudor-styled garage and pavilion were carefully designed to create a cohesive aesthetic with the house. Their placement, nestled into the surrounding gardens, makes them focal points visible from both the house and the main terrace. These structures serve as destinations to admire and explore, enhancing the overall experience of the property. A deliberate sequence of intimate landscaped moments links the architectural elements with the new terraces, gardens, and lawn. Each of these moments helps strengthen the site’s natural beauty, inviting exploration while maintaining a harmonious flow. Given the petite size of the property and the constraints of township zoning guidelines, creative solutions were essential. A new pool was incorporated alongside the main terrace and pavilion, enriching the property’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. To address drainage concerns, a rain garden was added, effectively managing runoff while enhancing the site’s sustainability. With antique brick-paved walkways and flagstone paving for the terraces, the landscape design creates a seamless connection between the new home, its gardens, and the historic gatehouse. The end result is a refined, cohesive experience that celebrates both the property’s heritage and modern living, blending beauty, function, and nature in a timeless fashion.
